The Cult – Original Line Up Perform At Royal Albert Hall: Review
October 11th, 2009 § 8 Comments
The Cult performed their entire Love album as part of their “Love” Live Tour and then some of their later stuff. The band consisting of Billy Duffy (guit) and Ian Astbury (voc) with John Tempesta (drums), Mike Dimkich (rhy guitar) and Chris Wyse (bass) played a blinding set and a rocking encore. The sound was awesome even in the nosebleeds. Duffy played on two White Falcons, one of which is the original he used for the Love albumĀ which he claims never comes out of the cupboard. For the first encore he played a selection of Les Pauls.
Astbury and Duffy then came back out and introduced the additional members from original line up Jamie Stewart (bass) and Mark Brzezicki (drums). Was nice to be there for that. I managed to capture some of She Sells Santuary before I ran out of memory for my camera.

Wow, Jamie Stewart played? Am v. jealous. Mind you, Astbury stills sounds crap live after all these years
They didn’t play Illuminated, but they did do Sun King.
Are you sure you were there
Jeremy – Haha! He was at least coherent unlike 1987 til about 200?. Seriously though I did think that Astbury was on fire. Great form. Amazing gig, unbelievable to have been there.
Barry – Sorry mate, I copied the set from wikipedia (of all places!) without giving it too much attention. Have now fixed it – and swapped DLR with Fire Woman. Feel free to correct me if I have overseen something else.
God, I was there too! I came from Italy only to see that show, and I’m still amazed…
I didn’t like the way Ian Astbury sang. On the other hand, Duffy’s guitar playing sounded even more catchy than on their records.
I’ll never forget this gig. And the venue was sort of a sonic temple – wasn’t it?

Sonic Temple indeed dk! I was in the circle – which was pretty high and far from the stage – the video is zoomed in a bit. The sound up there was amazing though!
